Understanding silk and matte finishes

A practical look at appearance, light and the sample checks that help you compare filament finishes.

Understanding silk and matte finishes

1. Describe the appearance you want

Silk and matte describe different visual directions. A silk finish emphasizes reflected light and a lustrous appearance, while matte provides a more subdued surface. Describe the desired look using a printed reference or a physical sample whenever possible.

2. Compare under the same light

Use the same model and review the prints under the same lighting. Rotate the parts to see how reflections change. Photographing every sample from the same position makes the comparison easier to record, but a screen image cannot replace seeing the material in person.

3. Check family availability

Silk, Dual-color Silk and Rainbow Silk are listed in the PLA range. Matte is listed in both PLA and PETG. Confirm the specific product series instead of assuming that an appearance is available across all material families.

4. Use printing results in your decision

Record the material series, printer setup and settings for each sample. Surface appearance also depends on the print and viewing conditions. Send our team the results and the appearance you want to achieve so the next discussion is based on comparable evidence.
